There are two main parts: the main blade and a handle made from materials like wood, acrylic, plastic, and ivory. They are incredibly sharp and one wrong move could lead into a nasty cut. However, straight razors provide a very clean shave.
The classic safety razor (double edge) comes in the classic T-shape frame. The head is covered by a casing that hides a single blade. Only a very small part of the blade is exposed. This prevents accidental cuts from happening. The handle is made from either metal or plastic and has non-slip grooves. Safety razors provide a very close shave, just like your disposable multi-blade razors. Since it only has a single blade, you will need a few more strokes to get rid of all your facial hair. The DE and straight razors are the types you have seen your grandfathers use (in my case though, my father). Many people are now ditching the contemporary multi blade plastic disposable throw away razors in favor of the classic double edged safety razor. There are reasons why you should be using these types of razors.
The first reason is that the double edged (or straight) razors have double edged blades that stay sharp very long and cut efficiently. You get less irritation with the classic razors as compared to the irritation you get with the cheap disposable ones.
The second reason you should be shaving with the classic razors and not the disposable ones is the cost of the blades. These are feather blades which are cheaper than the blade cartridges on the disposable razors. You get a lot of savings with the feather blades.
The third reason is that these feather blades stay sharp much much longer. You can go months not changing a blade without irritation whereas the disposable type of blades go dull very quickly. You will notice it after about four or five shaves. You will start getting more irritation and the blade sharpness has decreased. You will be thinking that you are being sold cartridges again.
The fourth reason you should be using these type of razors is that the blades are universal. You may have three different styles of double edge safety razors yet they accept the same type of blade. Any type of double edge razor blade will fit any type of double edge razor blade handle you have. Even if you grab your grandpa’s old safety razor, the blades will still fit! With the more contemporary razors, different brands will not accept other brand’s blades.
The fifth reason why you should be shaving with a double edge safety razor instead of a multi blade contemporary razor is the waste. There are usually ten feather blades in a pack which stay sharp longer and take up a lot less packaging. With the contemporary ones, they go dull much quicker. This means more waste (including the plastic!).
