Diabetes And Healthy Eating

Healthy eating, combined with regular physical activity and weight control, is important to manage diabetes.

People with diabetes should eat mainly high fibre carbohydrate foods such as wholegrain breads and cereals and vegetables and fruit. They should also reduce their intake of fat, especially saturated fat. Limiting the serving size of your meals is often required to maintain a healthy body weight. It is also a good idea to see a dietitian who can help develop a healthy eating plan.

Healthy eating helps a person with diabetes to:

1. Maintain general good health
2. Control blood glucose levels
3. Achieve normal blood lipid (fat) levels
4. Maintain a healthy blood pressure
5. Maintain a healthy body weight
6. Prevent the complications of diabetes.

No Special Diets Required

Healthy eating for people with diabetes is no different than for everyone else. People with diabetes do not need to prepare separate meals or buy special foods, so relax and enjoy healthy eating with the rest of your family.

  1. I don’t have liquid sweetner! Can some of the new sweetners like Purecane or Swerve be used? If so, how much would you use??

  2. Diabetics need very low carb intake. Using regular flour would be too many carbs for a diabetic diet. Would almond flour or coconut flour work as well?

  3. I’m sorry, sir, but this is NOT a diabetic-compatible recipe! Neither margarine nor regular flour are part of a diabetic’s diet, not if they want to regain and maintain their health. I stopped using regular flour because it’s been proven, overwhelmingly, to turn into sugar as soon as it’s in the mouth, and it spikes one’s insulin levels as fast as straight-up sugar does.
I’ve been substituting coconut flour in all my baking recipes for the past 3 1/2 years—it takes some time and effort to figure out how to make the correct subs—and my blood sugars have been virtually perfect without having to take any medications at all.
Margarine, as nearly everyone should know by now, is a hideous combination of vegetable oils and chemicals that are 100% unsuitable for human consumption, and is particularly bad for diabetics!

    1. I’m so glad someone brought up the using regular flour is terrible for a diabetic!! Also, good sweetness are Stevia or Munkfruit.

  4. I’ve been on the lookout for diabetic-friendly treats, and this brownie recipe is fantastic! The brownies came out soft and decadent, and I didn’t feel like I was missing out on flavor at all. I used a sugar substitute as suggested, and it worked perfectly. Thank you for sharing a recipe that lets people with dietary restrictions enjoy a sweet treat!
